The Truth Behind Animal Rights Hypocrisy, the HSUS

We've all seen the pictures of the neglected kitten wanting a home. Or the billboard advocating vegetarianism, with the piglet next to the puppy saying "You wouldn't eat one. Why eat the other?" Or maybe you've seen the picture of the little bunny begging you to take him home with you. On the outside, most animal rights groups look like saviours to the animals they claim to protect. Doing the world a service by saving the animals one at a time. But behind the cute advertisements, and "feel good" slogans, the ugly truth comes out.

They Need Your Money!?

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is the nation's largest and most effective animal protection organization..... Or so they say. That statement is found right on their website (humanesociety.org). That's a hefty claim, considering that more and more Americans are finding out the truth behind this organizations hypocricy.

It doesn't take much research to find out that the HSUS has more than 2 hundred million dollars in investments and cash! That's a lot of pocket change! But where does all that money go, and where does it all come from? You can guarantee that none of that money comes from any kind of honest work from any of those involved in the organization. It all comes from donations and contributions from people like you. People they've duped into believing that they actually do this world a favor. Then they get celebrities involved by toying with their heart strings a little bit, and Voila! They then have millions of dollars to do with whatever they want. So where does it all go? Well let's take a look at some of the numbers from 2010........

  • HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle took in $287,786 for his compensation package. Up about 7% from the previous year.
  • Of the 636 HSUS employees, 29 had a yearly income of more then $100,000
  • HSUS put another $2.6 million into its pension plan.
  • They spent $3.6 million on lobbying.
  • Another $47 million on fundrasing.
  • Of the millions of dollars pulled in for the year, only $528,676 actually went to helping pet shelters across the nation. That's only 0.418 percent of their budget!

Now, I'm not discrediting the fact that just over $500,000 is a lot of money towards helping animals. You would think that they would be putting a lot more toward that cause with all the money they're pulling in. It's not surprising to learn that recently the HSUS has started attacking a new group called the Humane Society for Shelter Pets (HSSP).Why? Because the HSSP encourages people to donate their money directly to local shelters instead of the big money, special interest organization, HSUS. I'm sure Wayne Pacelle wasn't happy to learn that with this new upstart organization, he might actually start feeling the pinch of the economy like everyone else in this country. But apparentlly he's more worried about lining his own pockets then helping local shelters like he claims to do. So who really needs your help? Pets in local shelters, or the HSUS?

Thanks. Animal Rights vs. Animal Welfare has always been something pretty important to me. Because many of the things I enjoy are constantly under attack from so called humane societies, and extremists, so I've done a lot of research. Glad you liked it.

$528,676 seriously??? How do they keep the lights on at all these Humane Society Shelters if that's all they put into them? When you said .418 percent did you mean to say 41.8 percent? I have done no research on the Humane Society so I don't know nearly as much about this as you do. I wonder how they could feed all those dogs in their shelters, pay the bills and have only spent $528,676. There is a Humane Society in every decent sized town in the USA as far as I know...

You're right. There are a ton of different Humane Society's across the nation. Small organizations who are really out to help animals. They're the ones that cover all the expenses of keeping the shelters running. Not the large organization Humane Society of the United States, which shouldn't be confused with your local organizations. They only claim to help animal shelters, but take the contributions and then do with them like I stated above. They lie straight up to people, telling them that they run shelters, (which they don't) and now they are implimenting more programs targeting young people. They've made an online game called "Fluff Friends Rescue" which targets kids, in which they can build shelters and buy actual HSUS products, brainwashing an entire generation into funding the HSUS. It's a scam! And by the way, Yes. I did mean $528,676, and .418 percent. That's legitimate.

Thanks for the article. I always feel guilty when I see those commercials because I don't donate but now I will look into the HSSP instead.

Thats the best idea. But even then make sure you know where your donations are goin first. Do some research.
